Spark - for Brightspace

1. Overview

Spark - for Brightspace is a free browser extension that displays your upcoming assignment due dates in a convenient side panel as you navigate your institution's D2L Brightspace portal. This policy is here to be upfront about what information the extension accesses, what gets saved on your device, and what we simply don't do.

The short version: everything stays on your device. We don't collect anything, we don't send anything anywhere, and there are no servers involved.

2. What the Extension Reads

While you're on a Brightspace page, the extension communicates with your institution's own Brightspace REST API — the same one your browser uses during normal site navigation — to retrieve the following information:

• Your active course enrollments
• Assignment names, due dates, and submission links
• Quiz names, start dates, due dates, and end dates
• Discussion forum and topic names and due dates
• General content items with associated due dates

All of this is pulled directly from your institution's Brightspace server using your existing login session. The extension never has access to your username, password, or any login credentials.

3. What Is Stored on Your Device

To keep things fast and avoid re-loading data every time you switch pages, the extension saves a small amount of information locally in your browser. This includes:

• Course and assignment data — a local snapshot of the information described above, so the side panel loads instantly as you browse.
• Panel scroll position — so you return to the same spot in the panel when switching between tabs.
• Active tab — to make sure the panel only appears in one tab at a time.
• Panel size and state — so your preferred layout (expanded or collapsed, panel width) is remembered between visits.

None of this information ever leaves your device. You can remove it at any time by clearing your browser's extension storage or simply uninstalling Spark - for Brightspace.

4. What We Never Do

• We do not collect, share, or transmit any personal or academic data.
• We do not use analytics, telemetry, or any form of usage tracking.
• We do not connect to any third-party services.
• We do not operate any backend servers or databases.
• We do not access any information outside of your institution's Brightspace domain.

5. Permissions

The extension requests the following browser permissions, each with a specific purpose:

• Tabs — used to identify which tab is currently viewing Brightspace and to ensure only one tab shows the side panel at a time.
• Scripting — used to inject the side panel interface into Brightspace pages.
• Storage — used to cache your course data and remember your panel preferences locally on your device.

The extension only activates on pages within your institution's Brightspace domain (pages matching https://*/d2l/*). It remains completely inactive on every other website you visit.

6. Changes to This Policy

If this privacy policy is updated for any reason, the revised version will be published here and the effective date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly. Any meaningful changes will also be highlighted in the release notes for the relevant update.
